The words we use
A widget is a small interactive program, with a short description called its manifest, that runs inside a locked box (a sandboxed frame) on a web page. A page is prose with widgets in it. A fork is a copy of a widget or page that records where it came from. A draft is a widget someone has submitted that has not yet been reviewed; drafts are labelled “unreviewed” wherever they appear. The library is everything published on learn.mimmsy.com. The operator is the operator of learn.mimmsy.com, the person who runs the site.
What you may do, and what you may not
You may read, embed, fork, and submit widgets and pages, on your own sites and in your own tools, for any lawful purpose, including commercial ones. You may connect the site to a chat assistant such as Claude and let it search, embed and submit widgets on your behalf.
You may not use the site to:
- publish anything unlawful, or anything you do not have the right to publish;
- harass, deceive or impersonate anyone;
- submit a widget whose code tries to escape its sandbox, collect data about visitors, mine cryptocurrency, or attack the site or the sites that embed it;
- flood the site with automated requests, fake usage signals, or fake votes to push a widget up the rankings;
- publish content aimed at children that is unsuitable for them, or any content that sexualises minors.
The operator may remove content and block access for anyone who breaks these rules, and does not need to warn you first.
The licence on widgets you submit
Every widget in the library is under CC-BY-4.0; submitting one is agreeing to that, and there is no way to submit under another licence. CC-BY-4.0 is a Creative Commons licence, and it means:
- For you, the author: you keep your copyright. You are promising that you have the right to publish what you submit, and you are letting anyone use it as long as they credit you. You cannot take that permission back from people who have already used it, though you can stop distributing the widget yourself.
- For everyone else: they may copy, embed, fork, change and sell your widget, as long as they name you (or “anonymous” if you chose no name), say the widget is under CC-BY-4.0, and say what they changed. The site does this automatically: every fork records its parent, and that record is never deleted.
By submitting you also give the operator permission to host, display, index and rank the widget, to show it in search results and in chat, and to open a pull request that moves it from draft to the library.
The library’s own licence
Widgets and pages published in the library are under CC-BY-4.0, credited to the authors named in their manifest or frontmatter, or to learn.mimmsy.com when no author is named. The site’s own code (the widget host, the software development kit, the site and the server) is proprietary: all rights reserved, as stated in the LICENSE file at github.com/jacobmimms/learn. You may read it; you may not copy, host or redistribute it. The name learn.mimmsy.com is not covered by either licence: do not present your copy as the original.
Reporting a problem, and takedown
If something on the site breaks these terms, breaks the law, or uses your work without permission, report it through /abuse/. Say which widget or page you mean, quote the part that is a problem, and say why.
Reported content can be hidden while it is reviewed. A hidden widget stops appearing in search, listings and chat. After review the operator either restores it or removes it for good. The person who submitted it can ask for the decision to be looked at again through the same address.
Your own API key
The chat can run on a model API key that you supply yourself (an API key is the secret string a model vendor gives you so your requests are billed to your account). If you supply one:
- you pay your vendor directly, under your vendor’s terms, and the operator has no part in that bill;
- your key is sent with your request, used for that request only, and is never stored or logged by the site;
- you are responsible for keeping the key secret and for what is done with it.
No warranty
The site, the widgets, the pages and the chat are provided as they are, with no promise of any kind. That means no promise that a widget is correct, that a page is complete, that the chat’s answers are right, that the site will stay up, or that a widget you rely on will still exist tomorrow. Widgets are teaching aids, not authorities: check anything important against another source. To the extent the law allows, the operator is not liable for any loss that comes from using the site.
Minimum age
You must be at least 13 years old to submit a widget, sign in, or connect the site to a chat assistant. Anyone may read pages and use embedded widgets. If the operator learns that someone under 13 has submitted content or signed in, that content and any account will be removed.
Cookies
The site sets one cookie: the session cookie, which keeps you signed in after you sign in. It is strictly necessary for that one job and does nothing else. There are no advertising, analytics or tracking cookies, and none from third parties, which is why the site shows no cookie banner: the law only asks for consent for cookies that are not strictly necessary.
Widgets also keep small things, such as your best streak, in your browser’s own storage. That is not a cookie, it never leaves your browser, and you can clear it in your browser settings at any time.
Changes and contact
The operator may change these terms. The date at the top is the date of the current version, and the history is in the repository. If you keep using the site after a change, the new terms apply. Questions about these terms go through /abuse/.
